8 Local Brookhaven Leaders Endorse Congressman Lee Zeldin for Re-Election

PATCHOGUE, NY – The Zeldin for Congress campaign today announced the endorsement of 8 Brookhaven elected officials. This comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement of 14 state and Suffolk County-level elected leader endorsements.

“I have known Lee Zeldin since he first ran for the United States Congress. I know how hard he works to deliver for all his constituents,” said Ed Romaine, Town Supervisor. “Whether it is working to keep our waterways clean or protecting our beaches or securing funding for needed infrastructure projects, Lee is there for us. I am proud to support his re-election.”

“Congressman Zeldin was crucial in securing funding to help the Town of Brookhaven repair the damage caused to our north shore by Superstorm Sandy. He has consistently demonstrated his commitment and ability to get things done for the Town of Brookhaven, and I strongly endorse his re-election,” said Jane Bonner, 3rd Council District.

“Lee is a longtime friend and a strong advocate for our community. Over the years, I have personally witnessed his resolve to fight for the Town of Brookhaven and all Long Islanders, first in Albany and now in Washington,” said Kevin Lavalle, 3rd Council District. “We are lucky to have him representing us in Congress, and I proudly endorse him for re-election.”

“I am proud to endorse Lee Zeldin for re-election to Congress. Over the last six years, he has worked tirelessly to bring federal resources to the Town of Brookhaven,” said Neil Foley, 5th Council District. “He has helped us improve our local environment through projects like the intracoastal waterway dredge, which is a boon for our local tourism, maritime industries and our way of life.”

“Lee Zeldin’s ability to deliver 2 billion dollars for Brookhaven National Laboratory is a regionally significant victory for our area,” said Dan Panico, 6th Council District. “His stewardship on Plum Island preservation has been exemplary. He’s never forgotten where he has come from and, as a fellow William Floyd High School graduate, he is always willing to help our area.”

This is the most Congressman Zeldin has raised in a single quarter, shattering many other local fundraising records in the process. Additionally, the $4.8 million he has raised so far this cycle is already the most Congressman Zeldin has ever brought in for a campaign.

“These numbers reflect widespread support for and trust in Congressman Zeldin who continues to deliver for Long Island families, including, just this year, securing the $2 billion Electron Ion Collidor “Dream Machine” for Brookhaven National Lab, over 1 million items of PPE & vital stimulus aid at the height of the Coronavirus Pandemic, and so much more,” said James Zenn, Zeldin for Congress Campaign Manager.

New York State Troopers PBA Endorses Lee Zeldin for US Congress 1st District

“Lee Zeldin has consistently championed police and first responders and is unafraid to stand up against calls to defund police departments and other radical efforts that will make our officers and communities less safe.  We are very appreciative for his support of police especially during these tumultuous times when it is fashionable to turn their backs on the law enforcement profession.”

Congressman Lee Zeldin Statement on NY-1 Democratic Primary Results

My entire life has and continues to be in service to America and Long Island, working on behalf of our neighborhoods so they are not forgotten and ensuring our country has everything it needs to fight the battles of a constantly changing world.

I am willing to work with anyone when it comes to safeguarding the health, welfare and safety of our country. That is why the Lugar Center and Georgetown University currently rate me as the 12th Most Bipartisan Member of the House of Representatives. It’s been an honor to lead the effort this year to:

  • Bring home the $2 Billion Dream Machine Electron Ion Collider project to Brookhaven National Laboratory
  • Secure over one million items of necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Suffolk’s health care providers and first responders
  • Help ensure our small businesses and their workers had the support they needed throughout the COVID-19 outbreak
  • Stand up to the threats our nation faces from adversaries abroad, such as the Chinese Communist Party, Iran, North Korea and others, while strengthening our relationships with allies like Israel

These are just some of the many important ways I’ve been fighting hard every day for the greatest Congressional District in America, which is why I’m especially excited and looking forward to delivering countless more victories as we move forward together.

America is at a crossroads, with many in our country pushing to ‘defund, ‘disband’, ‘dismantle’, or ‘abolish’ our police departments, institute a federal government takeover of our healthcare system, implement a disastrously flawed ‘Green New Deal’, and raise our taxes the likes of which we’ve never seen. We can’t let that happen.

Throughout my 17 years of service in our nation’s military, I’ve witnessed firsthand the dedication of so many selfless individuals who have put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms – we need more of that.

I will continue a laser focus on our economy, cutting taxes and growing jobs, increasing healthcare access and affordability, ensuring Long Islanders have clean air and clean water, protecting America’s safety and security at home and abroad, supporting our first responders and veterans, and stopping radical policies and other costly pursuits that would harm the families of Long Island.

North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Endorses Zeldin for Congress

PATCHOGUE, NY – The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters today endorsed Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) for re-election to Congress in 2020.

“Not only has Congressman Zeldin fought hard to ensure our economy gets back on its feet in the wake of COVID-19, he has stood up to protect our rights by vehemently opposing National Right to Work and been instrumental in battling efforts to undermine prevailing wage laws. He has consistently delivered for Long Island, and will continue to do so,” Anthony Villa of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters said.

“As someone who was born and raised in a union household, I understand the vital role labor plays in keeping our country moving, which is why I’ve continued to drive home good-paying jobs, like those spurred by Brookhaven National Lab’s new $2 billion Electron Ion Collider now coming to our district,” Congressman Zeldin said. “I am honored to have the endorsement of the Carpenters and look forward to working alongside them to ensure we get our economy booming and people working again here on Long Island.”

The North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters represents 28,000 members.

This is Congressman Zeldin’s 3rd labor endorsement of the 2020 cycle, having previously been endorsed by the SMART Transportation Division of the Long Island Railroad and Plumbers Local 200.

“During these unprecedented times, Congressman Zeldin has continued to work for what is important for his constituents through his work securing essential masks and gloves for our first responders as well as vital aid for our small businesses and families. His effort and working relationship with Washington has provided Long Island with a good future for upcoming years. For example, the Electron Ion Collider he secured for Brookhaven labs should provide many good jobs and boost the economy for all of Long Island, including our building trades,” said Danny Grodotzke, Business Manager for Plumbers Local Union #200.

Mario Mattera, business agent with Local 200 echoed this sentiment, “Lee has spent his career working tirelessly to protect the rights to organize of the hardworking men and women of Long Island. ‘That’s not how this works’: Lee Zeldin blasts ’embarrassing’ proxy voting after more than 70 Democrats fail to show in Congress

Republican New York Rep. Lee Zeldin admonished more than 70 Democrats who voted by proxy during Wednesday’s legislative session in Congress.

Speaking outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Zeldin criticized Democrats who elected not to be present because of the coronavirus pandemic and submitted their votes through Democratic House members assembled in the chamber.

“I have a lot of colleagues who will be giving their votes to other members to vote for them,” Zeldin said. “But I think one of the keys to leading is to actually show up.”

For the first time in U.S. history, representatives submitted votes without being present amid health concerns arising from the coronavirus pandemic. All Republican members of the House attended and submitted their votes individually. Zeldin said it was “embarrassing” that Democratic House members failed to show up and vote.

Zeldin pointed out that essential workers such as grocery store workers have continued working during the pandemic and that the same should be expected of our elected officials.

“Our grocery store workers, truckers, farmers, healthcare professionals, first responders, they’ve been showing up every single day throughout this entire pandemic,” Zeldin added. “It’s important for Congress to do the same. In order to lead, it’s important to show up. I’m not just going to give away your vote to other members to cast your vote, your voice, for you, for me, no, that’s not how this works. It’s important to show up in person, and that’s why I’m here.”

You’re Suffolk County, and you’re in a jam. Who you gonna call? Rep. Lee Zeldin.

By Joye Brown

Updated April 25, 2020 3:28 PM

U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, after voting for the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act last Thursday, found time to talk as he made his way north, from Washington back to Long Island.

Zeldin, a Republican representing the 1st Congressional District in Suffolk County, was nearing Baltimore when conversation turned to County Executive Steve Bellone’s quest to bend U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s ear for changes to a new federal program.

The changes would allow Suffolk to borrow more easily, and without overly high interest.

Zeldin said he was confident that he would hear from the secretary, a Republican who has a home in Suffolk.

“And I want to be ready,” Zeldin said as he drove, “so that Steve can be part of the call, that he can make his case as well.”

That was at 7:30 p.m. or so.

At 9:05 p.m., the call Bellone was waiting and hoping for came through.

“I want to thank Congressman Zeldin,” Bellone would say Friday, early on in his COVID-19 daily update, “because he was able to arrange a phone call … which we were able to have last night.”

Bellone described the exchange with Mnuchin and Zeldin as “a very positive phone call … a very positive conversation.”

Bellone said he was hopeful “that coming out of that will be something positive.”

But let’s go back a couple of weeks.

Suffolk, like other municipalities, wants to borrow, even as the COVID-19 pandemic is worsening.

But because of a recent drop in its bond rating, Suffolk County ends up offering more notes for sale than investors are willing to buy.

That borrowing also came at a price — 4% interest, which is astronomical for a municipal offering.

That’s when the letter writing and lobbying accelerated.

Bellone wrote a letter to Mnuchin; and he reached out to Zeldin, who wrote a letter, too.

Suffolk also sought assistance from Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Bellone said.

The quest, simplified, is to get the U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve to allow Suffolk to qualify for financing assistance through the Municipal Liquidity Facility.

Such assistance would allow Suffolk to borrow what it needs — and at significantly lower interest rates, which would save money for county taxpayers down the line.

But, for now, there’s a problem.

Cities with a million or more residents qualify for the federal program, and so do counties with two million or more residents.

And while Suffolk, with a population of about 1.5 million, would meet the mark if it were a city, it doesn’t qualify as a county.

Zeldin said he thinks the issue can be resolved.

“Lowering the … [threshold] to one million would include Suffolk,” he said. “That would provide an opportunity for Suffolk to make some decisions to help finances, and most importantly to help Suffolk County residents.”

Last week, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran sought, and received, an order from fellow Democrat Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo that exended the deadline for paying school taxes without incurring penalties and fines.

Bellone would like to do the same for Suffolk County taxpayers. But to do so would weaken the county’s already shaky finances by delaying needed revenue.

Hence, the pitch, from Bellone — through Zeldin — to Mnuchin, for the ability to do short-term borrowing to give both Suffolk, and taxpayers who cannot meet their obligations right now, some breathing room.

As the county waits for Mnuchin’s response, Zeldin and the Long Island congressional delegation to Washington have been working to seek other relief.

In addition to the COVID-19 relief-related measures signed into law recently, for example, the delegation is pushing to waive the usual 25% contribution to Federal Emergency Management Agency funds — so states could receive 100% of FEMA aid.

Zeldin said he’s also pushing for changes to some existing programs that would allow Suffolk and other municipalities to use COVID-19 funds to cover services that could be threatened because of lost revenue.

During his remarks Friday, Bellone mentioned Zeldin by name multiple times — as have he and multiple Suffolk officials, Republican and Democrat, in interviews over the past several weeks.

“We’re navigating this situation where everyone’s on the same page, as Long Islanders, as New Yorkers,” said Zeldin, who is seeking reelection in November.

“I might have had political disagreements, for example, with the governor in the past and I might have them in the future,” Zeldin said. “But … we’re in the same foxhole, with rifles pointing in the same direction, during this pandemic.”

Rep. Lee Zeldin joins Trump impeachment defense team

WASHINGTON — Rep. Lee Zeldin was named Monday to President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense team, a role that he takes on after months of vigorously defending the president at House impeachment proceedings, before TV cameras and via Twitter.

The White House announced Zeldin’s appointment along with seven other House Republicans who have been vocal supporters of Trump throughout the House impeachment proceedings last year. The appointments were rolled out as the Senate gears up for the start of Trump’s impeachment trial on Tuesday.

The team of defenders includes Rep. Elise Stefanik of upstate New York; Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, who serves as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee; Rep. Mark Meadows of South Carolina, a leader of the conservative Freedom Caucus; and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, a key ally of Trump’s on Capitol Hill. Reps. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, Debbie Lesko of Arizona, and John Ratcliff of Texas will also serve on the team.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement the lawmakers have already provided “guidance” to the White House’s legal team, which includes nine attorneys led in part by White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.

“The President looks forward to their continued participation and is confident that the Members will help expeditiously end this brazen political vendetta on behalf of the American people,” Grisham said.

In a Monday night tweet posted shortly after the White House announced his appointment, Zeldin (R-Shirley) said he “was honored to be asked to serve” on Trump’s impeachment team.

“The president NEVER should have been impeached in the first place,” Zeldin tweeted just before 9 p.m.

Zeldin, a lawyer, veteran, and third-term congressman, in an e-mail to Newsday Monday night said he believed the impeachment proceedings never should have gone forward. “The past few months on this circus should have been dedicated towards finding common ground” on a number of other critical issues.

Zeldin became a fixture at the closed-door House impeachment inquiry hearings that were held last fall, attending every deposition and interview, and slamming the Democrats and their methods to reporters gathered outside of the hearing room.
